“But I’m sure your parents just want you to be happy, right?” I ask, though I feel naïve saying it.
“I’m not sure that my parents know what happy is,” he laughs shortly. “Or maybe for them it’s something different than what it is for me. They’re very concerned about our name, about how many charitable boards they sit on. They were shocked when I wanted to go into business for myself, but I wanted to make something from the ground up, not just have things handed down to me.”
“You’ve done well,” I reply, patting the boat.
“Thanks,” Nick says, gathering up our plates and putting them into the basket. I look out onto the water. The darkness out here is much different than on land. Over the bow of the boat, there’s no light to be seen at all. We’re only lit from a couple small lanterns in the cockpit.
“Oof. I’m stuffed. That was amazing,” I say as he returns to sit next to me.
“We should try this other place I know in Chatham,” he says. “Maybe tomorrow night? What do you say?”
“Sure,” I reply, a little surprised. Already planning another date, are we?
“Where’s Jack?” I ask, trying to sound innocent. But Nick grins at me knowingly. “Below deck. Don’t worry about Jack,” he says. He takes me in his arms, laying us down on the plaid blanket. He kisses my neck softly, making me shiver with pleasure.
“Hey, aren’t you supposed to wait until the third date to have sex?” I ask, staring up at the stars with a grin.
“I think that ship has sailed, pun intended,” he murmurs in my ear. Then I feel him pause, and he picks up his head to look down into my eyes. “But if you want to hold off, I will,” he adds seriously.
I reach up and finger the collar of his polo. “What I want, right now, is for you to tell me what you want. I want to know exactly how to please you,” I whisper. “Tell me what to do.”
“Anything?” he murmurs, his eyes burning into me. “Anything. I trust you,” I whisper.
